Soon after my recent post on cloud storage vs. cloud backup, Dropbox made changes to the Pro product increasing storage to 1TB. Of more interest are the revised file retention options. The current product range is summarised below.
- Dropbox Free – file version history and deleted file retention remains at 30 days. No extension to this period is available.
- Dropbox Pro – file version history and deleted file retention remains at 30 days, but this can be extended to one year with the Extended Version History subscription add-on ( chargeable ). The year period starts from when the add-on is purchased.
- Dropbox for Business – file version history and deleted file retention remains at unlimited i.e. forever.
If ( and only if ) you had the Packrat add-on to your Pro package you have until November 1st to opt-in to unlimited version history on that product.
So in relation to the cloud storage vs. cloud backup debate, if you are a Dropbox Pro or Business customer then you have options to increase the time that deleted files are held. Even so, if an offsite backup is your sole requirement then a pure cloud backup solution is still your best option.
